Now I know you may be wondering, why a three inch square. And then this one is going to be cut on both sides so we get four 2 ½ inch squares like this. Now this piece right here, we’re going to cut one five inch square again and cut it to four 2 ½ inch squares. And then this piece right here we’re cutting right in half so 2 ½ by 5 inch rectangles. And we are going to leave one a five inch square like this and so we’ll put that right here. We’re going to take this piece, we’re going to turn it. And we’re going to cut it right in half like this. So the first thing we’re going to is we’re going to take our two pieces and I do have two stacked up here so a light red and a dark. And when I’m talking about a block, I’m talking about this quarter block right here. But the trick in making this block is that we get all of our pieces out of two layer cakes for two blocks. And so you just do whatever you want and have fun with that and play with it and make it work for you. Now we didn’t have enough to do all of them that way so we have one block up here that is lights and darks. And you can see in the quilt behind us that we paired our light blues with our dark blues and our light reds with our dark reds. The first thing you want to do is you want to go through your fabrics and you want to pair lights with darks.

And so I just want to show you how to make this quilt. So I just felt like it brought the whole project together and works so well. Now we also quilted it with a stars and loops pattern. And we used 3 ¾ yards of backing for that. Our backing right here we used this beautiful star fabric. Our outer border is a six inch border and you’re going to need 1 ¼ yards for that. And for that you’re going to need ¾ of a yard. You’re going to need some sashing and this outer border out here. And this is a really cool layer cake to use for this quilt because it has almost exact lights and darks which is what we played with in this whole quilt. So to make this quilt you’re going to need one packet of ten inch squares and we have used American Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings for Moda. And this is one of those quilts where it comes together as a secondary block. Isn’t this great? We love a red, white and blue quilt anyway and when we can add a star in it just makes it awesome. And I’ve got a fun project for you today.
